Other info: The Promise is a new oratorio based around the theme of Advent and is a follow on work from Will Todd’s Mass in Blue (2003) and Passion Music (2018) once again creating a powerful blend of jazz, blues and the English choral tradition. The words are a collection of Advent texts including original words by the composer. The Promise was commissioned by the Soochow University Alumni Chorus in Taiwan.
The ten movement work includes a beautiful new ballad melody for the famous words The Angel Gabriel with soft chorus and featured soprano soloist, a gospel infused setting of The People who walked in darkness have seen a great light, a funk infused realisation of the advent responsory I look from afar with Todd's trademark stratospheric solo's woven through, and a whirlwind and highly rhythmic setting of verses from the Magnificat.
The faster movements are contrasted with a spellbinding version of O Oriens for 8 part choir and piano trio and a soulful utterance of A Rose Has Sprung Up. The climactic movement of the work, The Promise sets a poem by the composer, combining advent themes with a hopeful vision of the future.
