We Are Laid Asleep Choral Suite is scored for SATB and piano with optional brass quintet, strings, harp and percussion. This 13 minute work contains settings of words by William Wordsworth from Tintern Abbey. It was written in anticipation of the Wordsworth anniversary in 2020 first performed by Cumbria Rural Choirs as part of their season celebrating Wordsworth and his connection to the Lake District.
“The music in all the movements is lush and lyrical like Wordsworth's words. In the first movement we hear the hypnotic repeated refrain 'We are laid asleep' as the main structural point about which the rest of the text is woven. The second movement employs more shimmering harmonies and the final movement draws on my association with gospel and jazz genres to create driving setting of this wonderful final text.” Will Todd, January 2020
