Stabat Mater (from Passion Music)

Scored for: SATB (with divisions) and piano
Level: Moderately difficult
Duration: 5 minutes

Other info: This sombre and evocative 'Stabat mater' is taken from Passion Music, a concert and liturgical work that continues Todd's fusion of jazz and choral music so successfully blended in his Mass in Blue. The delicate piano part often falls away to spiritual a cappella sections, and a soaring line for solo soprano rises out of the texture to draw the setting to a close.

Stabat mater dolorosa
juxta Crucem lacrimosa
Dum pendebat Filius
Stabat mater lacrimosa

O quam tristis et afflicta
Fuit illa benedicta
Mater unigeniti
Stabat mater lacrimosa

Quis est homo qui non fleret
Matrem Christisi si videret
Dolentem cum Filio
Stabat mater lacrimosa

The sorrowful Mother stood
full of tears by the Cross
while her Son was hanging there
The Mother stood weeping

O how sad and afflicted
was that blessed Mother
of her Only-begotten Son
The Mother stood weeping

Where is the man who would not weep
to see the Mother of Christ
in such suffering?
The Mother stood weeping
