Other info: J. B. Dykes (1823-76) set these words by Reginald Herber (1783-1826) to the melody ‘Nicaea’ in 1861. Will Todd learned to sing and read music at the same church, St Oswald’s, Durham, where John Dykes was vicar from 1862 onwards, and frequently sang this hymn tune and many other compositions by Dykes in his time in the choir there. This arrangement for choir, orchestra and organ was commissioned for the Sanctuary Choir of Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church, Dallas, Texas, Steven Jobman, Artistic Director, for the church's 75th Anniversary by the Terry Price Composer & Conductor Fund.
