The St. Albans Chamber Choir present a concert of soaring voices, centred around Will Todd's MASS IN BLUE.
They write:
Come and join us for an evening to lift you off your feet as we celebrate life with a fusion of musical styles.
Will Todd reveals the “real him” with his Mass in Blue. This unique and engaging piece blends the tradition of a Latin Mass with bluesy jazz rhythms and harmonies and so reflects both the joys and depths of human experience, creating an energetic celebration of life in all its richness and variety.
In Eric Whitacre’s Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine history is blended with modern musical techniques. The music mirrors the text by combining soaring lyrical lines with mechanical, rhythmic sections. Also a celebration of life, this piece explores themes of human aspiration, creativity and the power of human imagination.
Blending Renaissance elements with modern language and melodies, John Rutter’s Birthday Madrigals are another celebration of life, originally written to celebrate the 75th birthday of the great jazz pianist George Shearing. The music combines light-heartedness, wit and a touch of sentimentality to create an uplifting and joyful work.
The final work is Michael Tippett’s Five Spirituals, composed during World War II. A blend of European classical oratorio with African-American Spirituals, it reflects oppression and human suffering yet celebrates the strength and resilience of the human soul.
Please join us after the concert for drinks and nibbles!
