Scored for: SATB a cappella
Level: Challenging
Duration: 3 minutes
Other Info: The Virgin's song was written in 1989 and is a setting of a 14th century anonymous text. It is one of Will Todd’s earliest choral works. The elegant chromaticism of the short but intense setting opens out into the tonal flourish of the final chords. The work was published in December 2016 due to popular request. The carol was first performed by Bristol University Chamber Choir in 1990 and subsequently recorded by Full Score, conducted by Ralph Woodward on the Tyalgum label.
Jesu sweete, sone dear
On poorful bed liest though here
And that me grieveth sore
For thy cradle is as a bere
Ox and asse be thy frere
Weep I may therefore
Jesu sweete be not wroth
Thou I nave clout ne cloth
For on thee to fold
For thee to folde ne to wrap
For I nave clout ne lap
Jesu sweete be not wroth
But lay thou thy feet to my pap
And wite thee from the cold
