Never Monochrome,
Sepia or rose tinted,
Life is not an airbrushed front cover,
But a real life page turner.
So she said to me:
“You’ve got to find heaven in the moment”
She said “You’ve got to find silver in the lining, don’t you know”
It’s the ray of sunshine between the storm clouds
She said “You’ve go to find heaven in the moment now”

How Can I Tell Of Such Love To Me?

Scored for: SATB
Level: Challenging
Duration: 4 mins

Other Info: How Can I Tell Of Such Love To Me? was commissioned in 2007 by The Britten Pears Chamber Choir and first performed in St Margaret’s Church, Ipswich. The beautiful words are by the late Reverend Catherine Hooper who was tragically killed in a fatal car crash in 1999 along with two other clergy in the North East of England.  The Reverend Catherine Hooper was in the first group of women to be ordained as priests in the Church of England in 1994.

How can I tell of such love to me? You made me in your image
and hold me in the
palm of your hand, your cords of love, strong and fragile as silk
bind me and hold me.
Rich cords, to family and friends.
music and laughter echoing in memories,
light dancing on the water, hills rejoicing.
Cords that found me hiding behind carefully built walls and let me out,
love that heard my heartbreak and despair and rescued me,
love that overcame my fears and doubts and released me.
The questions and burdens I carry you take,
to leave my hands free – to hold yours and others,
free to follow your cords as they move and swirl in the breeze,
free to be caught up in the dance of your love,
finding myself in surrendering to you.
How can I tell of such love? How can I give to such love?
I am, here am I.

I Am Changed

Scored for: SSAATTBB a cappella
Level: Easy
Duration: 3 mins

Other Info:  I Am Changed was commissioned by The John Lewis Partnership Music Society for first performance at it’s annual service of Nine Lessons and Carols at Westminster Cathedral in December 2016. It was sung by the Cavendish Singers directed by Manvinder Rattan.

This reflective carol (setting a text by the composer) features an affecting recurring melody, sumptuous harmonies, and long, expressive phrases. Though it has moments of great intensity, the carol is primarily quietly optimistic in mood, with the homophonic texture and changing metre highlighting the heartfelt devotion of the text.

I have found an earthly throne,
In this bare place, this humble home.
The greatest love the world has known,
Heaven’s child resting here below.
I have found where I belong
I have heard the perfect song;
Angel voices from above
Heaven’s child given by God’s love.
All my tears are wiped away
I awake in God’s new day,
I am born again today.
I will make a promise true
In my life Your work to do.
I will give my all for You;
Heaven’s child I am changed in You;
Heaven’s child I am made anew;
Heaven’s child born again with You.

I Sing Because (from Songs of Love)

Scored for: SATB & piano (optional bass & saxophone)
Level: Medium
Duration: 6 minutes 30 seconds

Other Info: Third movement of the choral suite Songs of Love commissioned by Elena Sharkova for the Symphony Silicon Valley Chorale in 2012.

The haunting and yearning text is set with an aching melody which starts on upper voices and gradually builds to the whole choir.  The piece should be sung in as sustained way as possible, especially in the final four bars to give plenty of space for the piano ripples.

A recording of I Sing Because with piano accompaniment is available on The Call of Wisdom, on the Signum Classics label. It is also available on the album Footprints on the Tyalgum label with bass and sax.

I sing because you loved me once.
I sing when the sun shines,
when it rains and when it snows.
Because you held me in your arms one night.
I am as beautiful as a wide-open lily.
Because you looked at me once
and your soul was in your look
I fix my hair and wear perfume.

Because you admired me walking by
I saw my slender shadow move.
I was born into this world
because you loved me.
Now you are gone.
Because you loved me once,
I too can sweetly die.
So beautifully you loved me once.

I Sing Because from Songs Of Love is published by Boosey & Hawkes. It is available in printed format and also digital downloadable format.
