Brightest and Best

Scored for: SATB and Piano (Organ)
Level: Medium
Duration: 5 mins

Other Info:  Brightest and Best is a setting of the famous hymn words by Reginald Heber and is a particularly suitable text for Epiphany. Written in memory of Benjamin Hutto, Director of Music at St John’s, LaFayette Square, Washington DC, it received its premiere during the churches bicentennial year in March 2016.

Todd’s characteristic close harmonies and memorable melodies pervade this attractive carol, which is highly approachable for intermediate choirs. A tender unison treatment of the first verse leads to four-part harmony and a descant in successive verses, followed by a large climax, key change and introduction of an optional organ part for the final verse, before a calm, meditative ending. All this combines to create a showstopper of a carol which will delight audiences and congregations.

Brightest and best of the stars of the morning,
Dawn on our darkness and lend us thine aid;
Star of the East, the horizon adorning,
Guide where our infant redeemer is laid;
Brightest and best, brightest and best.

Cold on His cradle the dew drops are shining,
Low lies His head with the beasts of the stall;
Angels adore him in slumber reclining,
Maker and Monarch and ruler of all.
Maker, ruler of all.

Say, shall we yield Him in costly devotion,
Odours of Edom, and offrings divine?
Gems of the mountain and pearls of the ocean,
Myrrh from the forest, and gold from the mine.
For His favour, His favour.

For His favour, His favour.
Vainly we offer each ample oblation
Vainly with gifts would His favour secure;
Richer by far is the heart’s adoration,
Dearer to God are the prayers of the poor.

Brightest and best of the sons of the morning,
Dawn on us and lend us thine aid;
Star of the East, the horizon adorning,
Guide where our infant Redeemer is laid.
Brightest and best, brightest and best.

Choral Symphony No.3 (Gala and Gloria)

Scored for: Soprano, mezzo and baritone soli, SATB chorus, orchestra and brass band
Level: Medium
Duration: 25 minutes
Other Info: Will Todd’s Choral Symphony No.3 (Gala and Gloria) is scored for soprano, mezzo and baritone soloists, chorus, orchestra and brass band and was commissioned by Durham Choral Society in 2004.  The original Latin text has additional English words by Ben Dunwell and the piece is of 25 minutes duration.

“Perhaps Todd’s best work so far. His trademark ominously rumbling orchestrations pressing close upon the choir, giving way to radiant light for rhapsodic vocal solos. But perhaps most impressive, and moving, was the uniformed Riverside Band marching proudly under its banner along the Cathedral’s length.” Thomas Hall/ The Journal, Newcastle/ 2004

Choral Symphony No.4 (Ode to a Nightingale)

Scored for: SATB Choir and Symphony Orchestra
Level: Challenging
Duration: 30 minutes

Other Info: Will Todd’s Choral Symphony No.4 (Ode to a Nightingale) is a setting of John Keats’ famous poem which was commissioned by Hertfordshire Chorus, with generous support from Rod Jones, a patron of the choir for many years.  It was first performed on 11 May 2011 at the Barbican Hall, London. Ode To A Nightingale was recorded in June 2016 by the BBC Concert Orchestra and Hertfordshire Chorus for the Signum label for release in 2017 on a double CD album also featuring James McCarthy’s work Code Breaker.

“So many new works are embellished with gimmicks and sideshows, the point being to attract performers and audiences to hear a work which cannot (and should not) survive on its own merits.  Ode to a Nightingale by Will Todd has no fancy frills – it is simply a stunning piece of music which will, like established choral works such as Britten’s War Requiem and Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius, rise to the top.  Listening to it for the first time is a glorious experience and it just gets better and better as you become entranced by its beauty and its depth.” David Temple, conductor of Hertfordshire Chorus

“a substantial choral symphony for choir and orchestra, and very impressive. Todd creates a very convincing architecture which carries through the long spans of the structure, tied together by a recurring violin solo. The piece had something in common with the music of Britten…in that it was a serious and ambitious piece but very approachable, with a lot of surface detail to enjoy.” Bernard Hughes/ Reviews Blog/ 2013

“Ode to a Nightingale is a major and profound work from a composer at the peak of his powers; clear, lucid, beautifully orchestrated and with an accuracy of voicing, a use of orchestral textures that is quite simply breathtaking at times.” Stephen Jenner 2011
