Based on historical events at Hallsands, Devon in 1917 and New Orleans in 2005. Based on historical events at Hallsands, Devon in 1917 and New Orleans in 2005. The tale of the lost Devon village of Hallsands, destroyed in a great storm in 1917 following several years of government-approved dredging. Whirlwind follows the story of Lizzie May Prettyjohn, the last survivor of the gales, as she guides tourists around the ruins of her village where past and present mingle together.
“On stage, the action is led and unified by Heather Shipp as the older Lizzie. She and Rowan Fenner as her young self are given operatic musical lines by composer Will Todd, while the 27 (amateur) villagers sing unison choruses deriving from a more popular tradition. Miraculously, they fit together, answered by fiddle, flute and horn, more expressionist percussion and electronics.” Paul Allen / The Guardian / 2006
‘Todd’s two-part chorus writing is tight and vivid, provoking an impassioned performance from the homeless and ex-homeless cast of Streetwise Opera.’ Independent on Sunday
“The contemporary libretto fits beautifully with Will Todd’s resoundingly dramatic score, which can surely leave no one unmoved.” Tamzin Lewis / The Journal, Newcastle/ 2006

The main character, Alice, is 11 and completely marvellous. This is a soprano role.
Below is a cast list for Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. In Wonderland Restored the following parts were sung by the chorus and as step out lines:
Alice’s Mother also plays the Mad Hatter. They share certain characteristics such as being highly strung. Alice’s mother is a frustrated romantic.
Alice’s Father is also the Queen of Hearts. The Queen of Hearts is extremely fierce but possibly, beneath, she is just misunderstood….
Alice’s two gluttonous siblings are voracious and evil. They are also Tweedledum and Tweedledee who can be palliated with food offerings.
The White Rabbit is a lapin superstar.
Bottle is a singer and purveyor of dodgy liquids – and a bit of a prima donna.
The role of the Dormouse who is very tired and often found in the environs of tea.
Cheshire Cat is a sarcastic cat, he comes and goes as he pleases. He can be catty or feline, depending on his mood but don’t be fooled by that smile.
Caterpillar is a dreamer of dreams and smoker of things.
Humpty Dumpty is a pompous egghead and played by the same singer as the Duchess who is mad, very forgetful and highly romantic.
March Hare is a hare with depressive tendencies.
White Knight, a chivalrous idealist with limited practical use.
Victorians SATB chorus
