Other Info: Breath of God was commissioned by Westminster Presbyterian Church in Madison, Wisconsin. The anthem celebrates God’s work in and through the congregation during its first 100 years. The work was premiered on 5 June 2016, under the direction of Joe Chrisman, Minister of Music.

Will Todd writes: “Searching for a text to reflect Pentecost and also having in mind the celebrations of 100 years of worship at Westminster Presbyterian Church I found myself coming back to the sublime words of Edwin Hatch's hymn 'Breathe on me, breath of God'. For me the text boldly captures the spirit of Pentecost as, in Hatch's words, we are 'filled with the breath of God' and seek the 'fire divine'. The text also talks of renewal and the perfect life - surely a great inspiration for the next 100 years! I hope the gentle, gradually growing melody will provide a passionate expression of these lovely words, allowing for blended unison moments as well as fuller 4 part harmony. Plenty of rubato should be used!”Breathe on me, Breath of God,

Breathe on me, Breath of God,
Fill me with life anew,
That I may love what Thou dost love,
And do what Thou wouldst do.

Breathe on me, Breath of God,
Until my heart is pure,
Until with Thee I will one will,
To do and to endure.

Breathe on me, Breath of God,
Till I am wholly Thine,
Until this earthly part of me
Glows with Thy fire divine.
