George Abbot School writes:
Our Christmas at the Cathedral service features carols from a range of traditions. There are congregational carols, arranged for choirs, brass and organ, arranged by David Willcocks and popularised over many years through their inclusion in services such as the BBC’s Lessons and Carols, broadcast annually from the chapel of King’s College, Cambridge.
In addition, there are several carols which have been composed and arranged by Will Todd. Will is a Guildford-based composer of international renown, whose work draws heavily on jazz and gospel influences. We are delighted that our students were able to rehearse with Will as part of the preparations for this evening, and thrilled that so many of the carols are accompanied by a Guildford- based, jazz trio, led by pianist David Kirby.
Five separate student choirs are joining forces for this evening, joined also by members of staff both old and new. Our senior choirs (Senior Choir, Chamber Choir, George Abbot Male Chorus (GAMC) and George Abbot Female Chorus (GAFC), are joined by Young Voices (for girls in Years 7 – 9) as well as our KS3 Boys’ choir (for boys in Years 7 – 9). In addition to our massed voices, our celebrations also include contributions from Gabbot Brass, as well as our youth and senior dance companies.
Many, many thanks to all students and staff for the work that has gone into this evening. Thanks also are due to parents and carers for your support in enabling students to attend rehearsals, both in school and today at the cathedral. The sense of communal worship and singing remains at the very heart of our Christmas Carols. This evening, the George Abbot community gathers to celebrate the myriad joys of the season.
There will be a retiring collection in support of the Cathedral.
