Song Of Our Heartland, Will Todd’s large scale people’s opera for Opera North will premiere in County Durham, in partnership with Northern Heartlands.

The new opera has involved communities from across south and west Durham to create an opera inspired by the county, its people, landscape and heritage. Song of Our Heartland will be performed in an immersive style amongst the trains in the exhibition hall of Locomotion, the National Railway Museum in Shildon.

The new opera by Durham-born composer Will Todd, with story and direction by Caroline Clegg, libretto by Emma Jenkins and  with designs by Madeleine Boyd will receive four performances in May 2020 – two performances on 29th and two on 30th May. The Chorus and Orchestra of Opera North join forces with a newly-formed Community Chorus, drawn from the local area of south and west County Durham.

Following the death of Harold, a former miner and railway signalman, his wife Lilian, daughter Jacqueline and granddaughter Skylar face a stark choice. Should they move away to find jobs and new opportunities, or stay to face an uncertain future? Forced to remain by Harold’s death and driven by her grandad’s spirit, Skylar fights to save the things which are most important to her; the school choir and the abandoned Moonlight Ballroom Theatre.

Produced by Opera North in partnership with Northern Heartlands
