Other Info: Alleluia Warm-Up is a fun vocal warm-up or potentially an opening/encore piece with optional bass and percussion which (as much as possible) should be performed by the singers.  A drum kit could play as well using the percussion line. The piece is available as a recording on the album Footprints on the Tyalgum label, which features the Wellensian Consort conducted by Christopher Finch.

Other Info:  Written for Andrew Earis and the choir of St Martin-in-the-Fields, this carol part of Three Jazz Carols published by Boosey and Hawkes along with Once in Royal David’s City and Silent Night. In this innovative jazz arrangement, rich harmonies serve to bring new expression to familiar Christmas material which is written for SATB voices and piano, with optional bass and drums.  A recording of this arrangement is available on Christmas in Blue recorded by the choir of St Martin-in-theFields.

Other sets of carols arranged by Will Todd are also available.  Three More Jazz Carols contains arrangements of We Three Kings, In the Bleak Midwinter and Personent Hodie.  Two Extra Jazz Carols also published by Boosey and Hawkes contains God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen and O Come All Ye Faithful.  The Jazz Carols I Saw Three Ships and Hark the Herald are available as separates.

Bring Us, O Lord God

Other Info: Bring Us, O Lord God was composed for Andrew Earis and The Choir of St Martin-in -the-Fields for a BBC broadcast of the Durham Jazz Evensong in December 2010.  Written for SATB and setting words from a prayer by John Donne (1572-1631), it can be performed with piano or with additional bass and drums.  There are also obligato parts for alto sax, trumpet and trombone.

It is available as a recording by The Choir of St Martin-in-the-Fields on the album Evensong in Blue.

Durham Jazz Evensong

Other info:  Durham Jazz Evensong was commissioned by St Oswald’s Church, Durham, and first performed there at Evening Worship in October 2008. It was broadcast by the BBC from St Martin-in-the-Fields, London in 2009 as part of the choral evensong series.  Written for SATB with jazz trio, it includes additional parts for alto and soprano saxophones, trumpet, trombones and congas.

An early experimental studio version is available on the Requiem recording, although the score has been revised since.  It has been recorded more recently by the Choir of St Martin-in-the-Fields and is included on the album Evensong in Blue. 

The Psalms for the Durham Jazz Evensong are not included in this product.  Please visit the Durham Jazz Psalms page for more information and to order or download.

 

Recent revisions of the vocal score mean that the Magnificat is now the version heard on the original experimental studio version included on the Requiem recording. All other movements are as they appear on the Evensong in Blue recording.

Other Info:  Commissioned by David Fisher in 2002, this jazz carol for choir, piano and optional bass, drums and brass quintet is now published by Boosey and Hawkes.

Every Stone Shall Cry sets words by Richard Wilbur and is very energetic. The jazzy block chords and added 9th harmony reflect the joy of the Christmas message. The syncopated choir rhythms also make the text bounce along.

Recordings are available on Mass in Blue, on the Signum Classics label and Christmas in Blue on the St Martin in the Fields.
